Shift is a one-button drag racing game. You line up next to a rival car in front of a starting tree. Hold to stage, watch the three amber lights drop, and let go the instant it turns green. Then the race is all about the rev bar: tap to shift every time the needle swings into the green, and hit the bright stripe for a PERFECT shift and a burst of flame. Win or lose, the next rival is quicker. Lose three races and the run is over. Every day brings a new set of races, and your friends' ghost cars race them with you.
How to play Shift
- Hold anywhere while the amber lights come down. Letting go early is a red light and costs you the race.
- Let go the moment the light turns green to launch. Your reaction time shows on the dashboard.
- Tap to shift up when the rev needle reaches the green zone. The bright stripe is a PERFECT shift.
- Shift too early and the car bogs down. Sit on the red limiter too long and the engine blows.
- Beat the rival across the line to win the race. Three losses end the run.
Tips to get a high score
- The wait before green changes every race, so react to the light instead of guessing the rhythm.
- Low gears rev up fast and high gears slowly, so every shift has its own timing.
- PERFECT shifts in a row climb in pitch, give the car a boost and earn coins.
- A launch under about 0.15 seconds counts as a PERFECT LAUNCH and pays a coin.
- The rival gets quicker every race, so later wins come down to a clean launch and clean shifts.
The rival, race by race
The rival improves with every race you run, win or lose, and reaches full strength in race 12. Its reaction to the green drops from about 0.43 seconds to about 0.13. It shifts at 90% revs instead of 80%, and its engine goes from 86% of your power to 107%. After race 12 it gains roughly 3.5% more power every race, so every run ends eventually.
The lights get trickier too. The three ambers drop a third of a second apart. Green comes somewhere between about 1.1 and 1.6 seconds after the first amber in early races, and that window stretches to about 2 seconds later on. Counting the rhythm stops working, so watch for the green.
Launch and shift windows
Your score is races won, and any loss uses up one of your three lives: getting beaten, a red light or a blown engine. Let go within 0.15 seconds of green for a PERFECT LAUNCH. That's a 32% boost for 0.4 seconds plus a coin. Anything slower than 0.4 seconds bogs the car down for a moment.
The green zone on the rev bar starts at 76% revs and narrows to 83% by race 12. The PERFECT stripe runs from 86% (later 89%) up to 95%. A PERFECT shift gives the same 32% boost as a perfect launch. An early shift is the worst outcome: you run at under half power for nearly half a second.
The engine pulls harder the higher it revs, so a GOOD shift late in the zone beats a GOOD shift early in it. When in doubt, wait a beat. Coins come from perfect launches, every fourth PERFECT shift in a row, and any win where all four shifts were PERFECT. They're for hats and don't affect the race.
Red lights, blown engines and photo finishes
Releasing at any moment before green is a red light, even a split second early. If you weren't holding when the ambers started, press and keep holding. If you're not holding when green comes, a quick tap still launches you, because the release is what counts.
In gears one to four, sitting on the red limiter for about 1.3 seconds blows the engine. A shift made on the limiter is LATE: it doesn't bog you, but you've lost the time you spent stuck there. Fifth gear can sit on the limiter all the way to the line.
Each shift also costs a few frames with the clutch in and no drive, which is why a clean four-shift run matters more as the rival gets stronger. Wins by about a tenth of a second or less show a PHOTO FINISH.

FAQ
Why did I get a red light?
You let go before the green light came on. Keep holding through all three ambers and only let go on green.
How many gears are there?
Five. You shift four times on the way down the strip, and top gear runs all the way to the finish line.
Is it free?
Yes. Every Tapamine game is free to play in your browser with no download and no account.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Tapamine is built for phones first: portrait, one thumb, and it works offline after your first visit. It also works with a mouse or the spacebar on a computer.
How do challenges work?
After a run, tap “Challenge a friend” to send a link. Your friend plays the exact same level and races your ghost — a replay of your run — to see who wins.
